All the Hats: What It Really Takes to Run a Community Organisation

People often see the work, but they don’t always see the weight behind it.

Bridge the Gap has survived these past five years because of passion, grit, and relentless heart. But let’s be real: one person doing HR, fundraising, operations, admin, service delivery, volunteer management, communications, partnerships, AND cleaning the cupboard isn’t a “team” it’s a burnout trap.

This blog is a look behind the curtain. When you see the CEO emailing at 2am or delivering or collecting devices on her only rest day, know that it’s not because we want to hustle hard, it’s because we’ve had to.

And that has to change.

We’re asking for your backing not to expand flashy services, but to build the structure that protects the heart of this work. Support isn’t about handouts, it’s about building something sustainable. Something real.

As we continue to reflect and rebuild, we’re also preparing to gently restart some of our core services starting with device access and SIM/data support in October. It’ll be limited to just one or two days a week, to ensure we’re working within our capacity and protecting our health while still responding to community needs.

The mission hasn’t changed but how we deliver it must. Carefully, intentionally, and in a way that keeps the people doing the work safe and strong.
